Sculpt & Send is created and cast in a fine art bronze foundry that specialises in the traditional lost wax method. The same team that produces commissions and large sculpture projects also casts each kit piece, with careful finishing and a focus on preserving the detail you sculpted into the wax.
A foundry built around craft and collaboration
The Lost Foundry was founded by Rich Balman, an artist and bronze caster who trained in Fine Art and developed his skills through hands-on studio work and metalwork. Over time, the studio grew from small-scale production into a full in-house foundry space, bringing more stages of the process under one roof.
Today, the core team includes Flo, Jack, and Tyler, with a culture that encourages learning, sharing techniques, and working closely together on each project.
The lost wax method
Lost wax casting starts with the original sculpture. A mould is made, then a wax replica is created and encased in a ceramic shell. The wax is melted out, leaving a hollow form that is ready for molten bronze. This ancient technique is valued for the level of detail it can carry through from the original sculpture into the finished metal.
From wax to bronze, finished by hand
Every project moves through mould making and wax work, then casting, metal finishing, and patination to bring depth and character to the bronze surface. It is a careful, step-by-step process, and the reason why bronze sculptures can hold fine textures, tool marks, and small surface details so well.
What happens to your wax sculpture in the foundry?
When you send your wax back, it is handled like a real foundry job. Your sculpture is cast using the same traditional process used for the wider work coming through the studio, then finished by hand before it is returned to you.
The result is a solid bronze made directly from what you shaped, with all the individuality that comes with it.
