The Process 

Step 1:

Buy the kit

Choose the kit that best fits your creative vision, then place your order through the website. If you are buying as a gift, the kit is a lovely experience to open and enjoy together, and the finished bronze becomes something meaningful to keep long after the making session.

Step 2:

RECEIVE the kit

Your kit arrives by Royal Mail, usually within 3 to 5 days. Inside, you will find everything you need to get started, including our specialist sculpting wax, sculpting tools, and simple guidance to help you begin.

What makes this wax special?

Our sculpting wax is a specialist material chosen specifically for the Sculpt & Send process. It is designed to do two important jobs: it needs to be workable enough for you to sculpt by hand, and it also needs to burn out cleanly in the foundry so we can cast your original piece directly in bronze.

Because of this, the wax may feel quite firm when you first open the kit.

Once warmed, however, the wax has a lovely sculptural quality and is easy to work with, but it will firm up again as it cools. This is part of what makes it so useful for shaping details and holding form while you work.

Step 3:

Make your wax

This is the fun part! Settle in at the table, put some time aside, and start shaping your sculpture. You can keep it small and simple, or spend longer refining the details. There is no right approach. The aim is to enjoy the process and let your creative side flourish!

If you are sculpting with others, everyone can make their own piece from the same starting point, then send everything back together once the session is finished.

Step 4:

Complete the form and get your return label

Once your wax sculpture is finished, you scan the QR code to complete the return form. This gives us the details we need to log your sculpture and prepare its return journey.

After you submit the form, we generate your return label. It is sent to your email from Royal Mail as a QR code, ready to use at the Post Office.

You will also receive a confirmation email from The Lost Foundry to let you know your return is in progress. This email includes helpful next steps and the option to choose a finish upgrade; either a polished finish or verdigris patina, before casting begins.

Step 5:

PACKAGE IT UP and send it to us

Carefully package your wax sculpture so it is as protected as possible in transit. Place it securely in the packaging, then take it to your local Post Office and use the QR code return label.

Step 6:

WE RECEIVE YOUR WAX

When your wax arrives with us, we check it in and add it to our system. This step is important as it connects your sculpture to the details you submitted on the return form, so we can manage casting and delivery accurately.

Step 7:

IT GETS CAST IN BRONZE

Next, your piece moves into the foundry process. Your wax is cast into bronze using the traditional lost wax method. This is the same process used for fine art sculpture and commissions.

Because your bronze is made from your original wax, every finished sculpture is completely individual, including small marks, textures, and the overall character of your creation.

Step 8:

FINISHED BY HAND

After casting, your bronze is cleaned and given a beautiful hand-finished patina at the foundry. This stage brings out the detail in your sculpture, refines the surface, and prepares it for its final look.

You also have the option to choose an upgraded finish before casting; either a shimmering polished finish or gorgeous verdigris patina. Each is applied by hand, giving your sculpture its own character and depth.

Step 9:

WE PACKAGE IT UP AND SEND IT

Once finishing is complete, we carefully package your bronze and post it back using Royal Mail to the address saved from your return form details.

Step 10:

YOU RECEIVE IT

Your finished bronze arrives back with you, ready to display, gift, or keep as a lasting reminder of the making experience.
